it's taken me a while to finally write this review. however, now again seeking accommodations in nyc, i am reminded how awful my last experience was.
stayed 2 nights at the chelsea inn. my husband and another couple with whom we travelled were quite disappointed at the entire experience. the staff were indifferent to say the least. the price was around $180 per night for each of 2 rooms (one couple in each) which shared a bath. the rooms were shabby and dark and the lights weren't working properly.
the "pastries" which we had to retrieve at the bakery (separate entrance from the hotel) were stale. there were no accommodations at the bakery or the hotel for eating them with our coffee, like a dining room or cafe. so we had to take them up to our depressing rooms. requiring an additional walk up the flights of stairs...
...bringing me to the real topper of the hotel...we were on the third floor and it was a WALK-UP with narrow, steep stairs. when we made our reservations over the phone, no one asked if a third or fourth floor trek would be okay. no mention of "we don't have an elevator". when we discovered this challenge, quite distressed, we went to the desk to explain that members of our party were older and my husband has heart and breathing problems and the stairs were too difficult. they made clear that it was just our tough luck and they couldn't do a thing about it. (we did notice that there were first floor rooms that were empty) we ended up attempting to minimize the number of times we walked up to the rooms AND, each time, we had to take several breaks to make it up the next section.
so, i will NEVER stay here again and recommend that, unless you want to pay a good amount for bad service, dreary, semi-clean accommodations, try to avoid this place. there are many better for the price in nyc.
