“never again”

Chelsea Inn - 17th Street

it's taken me a while to finally write this review. however, now again seeking accommodations in nyc, i am reminded how awful my last experience was.

stayed 2 nights at the chelsea inn. my husband and another couple with whom we travelled were quite disappointed at the entire experience. the staff were indifferent to say the least. the price was around $180 per night for each of 2 rooms (one couple in each) which shared a bath. the rooms were shabby and dark and the lights weren't working properly.

the "pastries" which we had to retrieve at the bakery (separate entrance from the hotel) were stale. there were no accommodations at the bakery or the hotel for eating them with our coffee, like a dining room or cafe. so we had to take them up to our depressing rooms. requiring an additional walk up the flights of stairs...

...bringing me to the real topper of the hotel...we were on the third floor and it was a WALK-UP with narrow, steep stairs. when we made our reservations over the phone, no one asked if a third or fourth floor trek would be okay. no mention of "we don't have an elevator". when we discovered this challenge, quite distressed, we went to the desk to explain that members of our party were older and my husband has heart and breathing problems and the stairs were too difficult. they made clear that it was just our tough luck and they couldn't do a thing about it. (we did notice that there were first floor rooms that were empty) we ended up attempting to minimize the number of times we walked up to the rooms AND, each time, we had to take several breaks to make it up the next section.

so, i will NEVER stay here again and recommend that, unless you want to pay a good amount for bad service, dreary, semi-clean accommodations, try to avoid this place. there are many better for the price in nyc.

“safe place to stay”

Wow what a great price for new york city $145.00 a night but you do get what you pay for. but the room is clean but the stairs to your room are a killer!!!! they are old and small and very steep, I would ask for a room on the bottom floor next time.

The location is great, we are two girls traveling alone and we always felt safe there, the room is very loud on the weekends its not the hotel thats loud its the apts around the hotel but other than that we were very happy.

If you can afford more money there maybe better places to stay but most of the small hotels are old like this one in nyc, so we feel like we paid a fare rate..we did not spend much time in the hotel anyways so its a good place to sleep. but if your looking for more this is not the place for you.

We will stay there again, there is great places to eat and some fun bars around the hotel.

I've stayed here numerous times. The locaiton is wonderful...and Nana's banana bread isn't bad either.
I travel with my teenage daughter's and the locaiotn was great for shopping & subways. I felt safe walking around the area any time of day or night. We've stayed in the family room with kitchen as well as a twin with shared bath. All our stays have been great and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

“Chelsea Inn - real New York living”

Chelsea Inn - 17th Street

The Chelsea Inn is a FABULOUS place to stay in New York if you are on a budget. It is a beautiful old building, typical New York style over many floors. We stayed for a week just before Christmas 2007 and couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay.

We found it to be like a 3 star budget hotel. It was very quiet and we felt like we were staying in our very own apartment in NYC. The room was large with a TV and fridge (great if you are on a budget) with a sink in the room, and a bathroom shared onyl between us and one other room.

The staff were friendly and accomodating. I have seen reviews where people say their bedroom door was left unlocked after cleaning - this happened to us on the first day aswell, but we simply found the maid, asked her if she could make sure our room was locked after she'd finished each day, and it was without fail.

The breakfasts are yummy and again - typically New York. You get a tea/coffee, fruit juice and freshly baked pastry. The lady in the breakfast place is really nice if you are nice/polite to her, and she makes all her own pastries and cakes which are delicious!

Overall we had a GREAT stay at this place. Clean, quiet, spacious, relaxed and atmospheric, we felt like we were real New Yorkers in our own little apartment.

Oh, and the location is fantastic. Right between 5th and 6th Ave, near to several Subway lines, walkable to Times Square - PERFECT!!

“Loved it!”

We stayed at the Chelsea Inn over the holidays and truly enjoyed our stay. The hotel was nice and has a lot of character, a lot nicer than all those chain hotels. We stayed there in two parts and both times our room was really nice. The shared bathroom wasn't a problem, like many, we didn't see much of the other people sharing the toilet, probably once or twice.

The location is very good indeed, two subway stations really nearby and trains take you right in the heart of midtown. Chelsea itself is enjoyable too, lots to see and do.

The often mentioned nightclub downstairs didn't bother us, once we heard the thumping of the bass, but got over it.

All in all, our stay was really very good. We will definetely recommend Chelsea Inn for anyone who asks. Perfect cute get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city.
