We spent a couple of nights at this brand new, upscale Key West boutique hotel, the Orchid Key Inn. The hotel opened less than a week ago and I believe we were the hotel’s first guests! It is located where the old Key Lodge Motel used to be – right on Duval Street, but with the additional benefit of being just a few short blocks away from the rowdy bars and partygoers. (Disregard any reviews from before October 2008 because they would pertain to the old motel that no longer exists.)
Our room was spectacular. We had an environmentally friendly Jacuzzi tub, a HD flat-screen TV, great lighting and fabulous artwork, FREE long-distance telephone usage, and FREE internet usage. But the room’s best feature was its bed. Comfy, comfy, comfy, with all sorts of pillows and comforters. If you lower the temp in the room, it feels awesome to snuggle up in bed under all those covers.
Although we did not spend much time in the pool, the outdoor area is incredibly inviting. The chaise lounges are shaped in a way that invites you to fall asleep while catching a tan, there is a waterfall that soothes you as you lounge in the outdoor Jacuzzi, water gently overflows from large landscaping pots, music serenades you throughout the property (the speakers look like landscaping rocks), and you are never more than a few feet away from liquid sustenance provided by the owners in their Orchid Bar. There were cold drinks available, water, beer and wine. This is also where the hotel serves a continental breakfast to its guests.
It is clear that the owners, Bill and John, wanted their new hotel to be “green” friendly. Everything about it is designed in a way that is mindful of its impact on the environment. And even if you don’t stay there, make a point of visiting the reception area to take a look at the unique wall that periodically changes color. It is very cool indeed.
The owners also own the Almond Tree Inn across the street – where we have stayed as well. And while you cannot go wrong spending time at either location, these two properties are very different.
We loved the Orchid Key Inn. It truly is a winner.
