“Power Outage Spoiled Two-Day Stay”

Hatuchay Tower Machu Picchu Hotel

2 of 5 stars
California
Nov 8, 2008

Arrived to find no electrical power in our hotel or the entire town, which the locals say occurs often. Our hotel thus had no power except for an (too) small emergency generator that only ran for a few hours in the evening but not after midnight or during the daytime. Becasue no 220V power was available from this generator, we also had no hot water and the toilets could not be flushed. The hotel supplied buckets to transfer cold water from the tub to the toilet to flush, but they did not have emergency flashlights for the very dark nights after midnight to go to the bathroom or whatever. The room and restaurant were just average, but the elevators did not work not only because of a lack of power but were also in maintenance. Many of the rooms suffered from swarms of gnats or small black flies that filled the rooms at night when the brief lights did come on. We suggest guests bring their own small flahlights for such frequent power outages and be sure to bring plenty of cash as the ATMs were also down without power.

We stayed at Hatuchay Tower for one night in October 2008.
It's modern hotel. If you're looking for old-world charm, this isn't the place. If you're looking for a comfortable quiet room where the plumbing works, you'll be happy.
We made the reservation by email to the hotel. Response was prompt and in English. The hotel sent someone to meet us at the train station. The walk from the station to the hotel was about 5 minutes.
The rate was (I think) $218, which is a lot of money by Peruvian standards, but we were happy to stay in a hassle-free environment after spending an energetic day at Machu Picchu. This rate include buffet breakfast and dinner, both of which were quite good. The web site said there would be a 10% service charge added, but they didn't ask for it.
Staff spoke good English and were very helpful when we accidentally flooded the bathroom floor from the shower. They were happy to hold our luggage after checkout.
They asked for payment in advance (at checkin). When I asked to see the room before I paid, they looked at me like I was nuts but the let me do it.

I was there for just one night, after a sunny, beautiful, but tiring day at Machu Picchu.

Location is o.k. Room had an "old fashioned" look, but was really clean and nice. Besides, we were lucky to have a beautiful view from our room, to the Urubamba river (I realize how lucky we were after reading the reviews of some travellers that had rooms with the "back view")

Breakfast was o.k. too

For only one night, this hotel is more than enough

“Not worth it!”

Hatuchay Tower Machu Picchu Hotel

Washington, DC

My husband and I stayed there for 2 nights in Sept 2008 so we can maximize our time at Machu Picchu. Truthfully, the place is only good for its convenience to Machu Picchu. It is expensive for what you get, but as other reviewers have stated, everything in Aguas Calientes was expensive because everything had to be brought in by the railway. The town would be non-existent if it weren't for its proximity to Machu Picchu.

Although dinner was included, it was very average. I also got extremely ill after dinner there on our second night. I'm still unsure which item made me ill (as my husband did not get sick at all), but I had high fevers with diarrhea and vomiting for 2 days. We were very careful to only brush our teeth with bottled water as other reviewers have recommended.

The place also had very poor internet service. They advertised that they had free wireless internet, but you basically had to be in the lobby area to get any kind of good reception.

Mosquitoes were everywhere. They are not the same kind in the U.S. east coast ( where we are from) . These mosquitos are not very visible and appear in swarms, much like gnats. They do bite, but 100% DEET works quite well. My husband and I sprayed it on ourselves and in our bed and I was only bitten twice on my forehead, where I failed to apply the DEET.

Hope this helps.

“Distinctly Average”

Hatuchay Tower Machu Picchu Hotel

Sep 13, 2008

After reading many of the reviews about this hotel it's fair to say that this was one hotel we didn't know what to expect. So many mixed opinons.

We booked this hotel for one night through an agent, not really wanting to pay what seemed like exorbitant prices for the Sanctuary Lodge or the Sumaq. Was the Hatuchay Towers value for money......well no, but I don't think any of the hotels in Aguas Calientes could be considered that. You pay for location.

The rooms decor was dated, however it was clean, which considering other reviews we were grateful for. We booked a suite at the very top of the hotel, and were rewarded with a beautiful view over the Urubamba river, however you can't really spend much time appreciating it due to the mosquito's and biting bugs. A shame.

The evenings meal was included in the price of our room, but the food was unspectacular, being a buffet style with some average dishes which were served by a pretty grumpy bloke who didn't seem like he wanted to be there. After a bad experience of buffet food in Turkey we stayed clear of this with a trip round Machu Picchu the following day we weren't taking any chances.

Our advice would be to find a restaurant in Aguas Calientes if possible, as looking on this site, there are actually a few.

Overall impressions, very average for the money it costs, but clean.
