We spent 7 days here in Hilltop room 5. We absolutely loved this place. From the moment we arrived I was impressed and something impressed me every day I was there!
Our accommodation was stupendous, two separate buildings, one as a day/sitting area, the other the bedroom, bathroom and dressing area. The rooms are done in a natural style, lots of wood and cotton and really have a back to nature feel to them. having said that they had everything you could want and more. We were provided with water daily and had a fruit basket in our room. All the usual things i.e.: toiletries, tea, coffee, etc were provided. Plus lots of other stuff that we just didn't use like DVD libraries, laundry services. I honestly can't think of anything I needed I didn't require and the standard of toiletries was so high we used theirs and took ours home! As others have noted some of the windows and doors are a little gappy and do let in the geckos but to be honest we didn't get lots of mosquito's in the room and no other type of insect darkened (inside!) our doors. I loved having the gecko's in the room. It is a very natural place and if you don't like insects then this isn't the place for you. We did get bitten (maybe 10 times in the week) so insect repellent in the evenings is a must. They do 'fog' the resort but being in a jungle you just have to get used to that... The view was amazing and it genuinely felt like we were the only people at the resort when we were in our room, we weren't overlooking anyone and weren't over looked. We had a beautiful infinity pool and we just loved it.
Every guest has a butler who caters for anything else you need at all and books your table for dinner when required, transports you about the resort should you need it, books excursions, sorts flight and generally does everything for you. We really struck lucky as we had a lady called Thao who was beyond brilliant and added so many laughs to our stay as well as being one step ahead of our requirements as if almost mind reading! I felt tearful leaving her! You are also provided with bikes should you wish to cycle around and walking around brings it's own pleasures too.
We booked full board and I wold recommend that as an option. We personally found the food to be excellent, clearly all freshly prepared and a good selection on the menu. There were Vietnamese dishes offered at all sittings and also a selection of food from other countries. We observed that in our opinion the menu was working harder here than else where we have stayed as the guests were very international: UK, USA, Russia, Oz, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Spain, Italian, French to name a few so catering for all tastes must be very difficult! Some have said that the food is expensive and I suppose it is compared to Vietnam generally but is was in line with what we've paid in other hotels of this class world wide and frankly of better quality than most! If you ate in a 5 star restaurant anywhere in Vietnam I'm sure you'd pay a similar price and it isn't fair to compare prices with your average restaurant in the area. Also, bear in mind you're paying for the location, difficulties of getting food in, etc. On average a lunch dish was about $15 (£8) and a main course was about $25 (£14). I would also say that the sandwiches at lunch are so huge we ordered one between us simply because it was just too much food. Breakfast was buffet style and was of a very high standard and they were happy for you to take fruit from here for later which was great as sometimes in the heat you just don't fancy lunch.
We also chartered a boat for a very reasonable amount and went snorkelling to Moon Island, which I'd strongly recommend. Nin came with us and he was a most excellent snorkelling companion. The hotel has a variety of trips, some quite different i.e.: Go fishing with the local fishermen! I thought they'd been very imaginative with the selection and again the excursions were reasonably priced.
The staff here were by far what made the experience. The service was second to none and every member of staff was fantastic in their efforts to be friendly, helpful and attentive. It was a genuine shock to the system to go back to real life and be treated very rudely at Hong Kong airport!! I can't single anyone out particularly as no name badges are worn but it would be impossible to do so anyhow as standards were universally high. What some lacked in English (although the standard of English was very good) they made up for in smiles and willingness to help.
The common area's are very nice, the pool was great. I note someone said the water was untreated/looked dirty. This is not the case, it is just the pool constuction is done to look like natural rock and not tiled bright blue so it all looks more natural. It is very quiet down there and well serviced by the pool boys who again were great, bringing around cold towels and water, etc. The hotel has a very nice house coral reef which we snokelled on and saw a fair bit, some very nice coral and the Spa was brilliant, had several treatments and they were all good, would recommend having the Vietnamese massage!
You can tell by my review that I loved this place and would return in a heart beat. If you enjoy modern, contemporary hotels then this isn't for you but to take time out of life, truly relax in a natural environment you will not be disappointed if you came here.
