“Not Impressed”

Sukhothai Bangkok

I guess we were expecting a lot after reading the reviews on this site.

I travel to Thailand for business quite often and this was my first stay at the Sukhothai Bangkok. (for Two Nights)

Everything went off well from check in to departure, with the exception of “spiders and cobwebs in our toilet”.
After paying such prices and a part of "the Leading Hotels of the World" this was a shock to us.

Another Gripe was - In this day and age, I’m sure most travelers need to charge their cell phone or laptop - unless you are ready to get down on all fours and hope you can target the plug point under the writing table this is going to be a challenge. There were no easily accessible plug points in the room!

After complaining, we did get a room change the next day but after staying at the Four seasons at Koh Samui, this was a quick step back to reality.

Would not stay here again!

“Lovely hotel; good value for what you get”

Sukhothai Bangkok

What a lovely hotel! Very elegant, sleek and modern. I suppose it does look like a large-scale business type hotel, but it has a lot of elegant touches throughout it, and the ambiance here borders on a Zen sort of calmness. For what you get, it is a surprisingly good value for the money.

Great service, very nice breakfast. My room was delightfully quiet, and the linens were extremely comfortable, bordering on decadent. Housekeeping was excellent, and my room was immaculate.

I was very pleased with the service. I arrived VERY late (after a long flight from California, through Tokyo -- about 1am) and I did not bring a laptop. Even though it was well after midnight, and the Business Centre was closed, the concierge got a key and opened up the Business Centre just for me, so that I could email my family and let them know that I made it to Bangkok ok. This is the sort of thoughtful service that one treasures, especially when traveling alone. Thank you, Sukhothai!

I breakfasted at the Colonnade restaurant, and breakfast was lovely.

At first glance, the hotel has a big, impersonal feel to it, but in the center of the hotel there is a pretty central garden filled with trees, ferns and reflecting ponds. There is also a small selection of boutique shops in the hotel.

The hotel left me a beautiful box with a Thai ceramic (an ornate bowl with a lid) as a special gift for my stay there.

The hotel is very quiet, and insulated from the noise and traffic of Bangkok, but it's just a short drive away from all the major tourist sights.

The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant at all turns.

I'm only sorry that I did not have the time (I was there 2 nights, but was pretty rushed on both occasions) to avail myself of their spa treatments. Next time for sure!

About me: I'm in my late 40s, and do a great deal of adventure travel and photography. I've stayed in everything from a $2 a night hotel Turkey (not a good idea) to youth hostels, to some of the most elegant and spectacular hotels in the world. I've traveled extensively in Europe, and have just returned from Thailand and Nepal.

Sukhothai is indeed an oasis in the midst of the craziness thay is Bangkok. It is characterised by beautiful gardens and a cool sophisticated thai styling. The rooms are lovely - clever lighting system, funky tiled bathrooms and well appointed. Service is impeccable and the food is outstanding. And yet the resort is not a soul-less high rise.

The only thing to watch is costs - from cocktails to a casual coffee, they will sting you if you are not expecting it.

“Best hotel in the world”

Sukhothai Bangkok

5 of 5 stars

Nestled among tall modern office buildings in the “embassy row” section of South Sathorn Road is an oasis of lush tropical gardens, water features, and traditional Thai pavilions and low rise buildings that makes up one of Bangkok’s best hotels - The Sukhothai.

This extraordinary hotel is in a perfect location. Set well back from the busy Sathorn Road, you are minutes from the Lumpini underground station which also connects with the Skytrain, together putting you within easy reach of many of the city’s attractions. Alternatively, you can get some exercise and do a 30 minute brisk walk to the central shopping area through Lumpini park, worth a visit in any case.

Only minutes from the hotel and just across a busy intersection at Lumpini station and Lumpini park are the night markets - a must see in Bangkok. Next door to the hotel on the 11th floor of the YWCA building is a great seafood restaurant, one of the JeNgor chain. All the locals eat here probably because the food is delicious, un-pretentious and good value.

But the main attraction is the hotel itself. A wonderful sense of calm envelops you on arrival. Maybe it’s all the lotus ponds, architecturally aligned colonnades, and air scented by umpteen varieties of frangipani trees, or maybe it’s the extremely polite hotel staff who greet you respectfully at every turn. Whatever it is, it works wonders.

Although arriving after midnight for a three night stay, we were warmly welcomed and escorted to a garden suite – an upgrade, and what an upgrade! A huge ground floor suite of three rooms overlooking a lotus pond and tropical gardens greeted us. The suite featured tall ceilings and a bathroom the size of most European hotel rooms!

The next morning we were to discover the many delights of the hotel including a sumptuous breakfast buffet in the Colonnade restaurant, a 25 metre swimming pool, tennis courts, a small but well equipped and competently staffed gym, interesting boutique shops, and acres of lush gardens. Later, by virtue of a complimentary lunch at the hotel, we also discovered easily the best Thai style restaurant in Bangkok – Celadon.

Last year, we stayed at The Peninsula which is across the river and is a typical high rise hotel with all the expected 5 star accoutrements but lacks the character, service ethic, and central location of the Sukhothai. I will definitely be returning to the Sukhothai.
