“Hanbury Manor gone drastically downhill”

This hotel has a lovely setting, with a famous golf course, and was to be an ideal venue for a ladies reunion. Having previously used this hotel for business, I recommended this place to friends. Unfortunately the service proved to be a disaster, particularly in the Cocktail Bar, where we waited 25 minutes to be served on 2 occassions. The staff were mostly foreign and their command of the English language was not great, resulting in them not knowing the difference between a Margarita and a Martini, and then having the audacity to tell us the drink was correct but served in the wrong glass. Thankfully it was eventually resolved to our satisfaction.

The spa was far from relaxing - it was full of children which surprised us for a 5 star premium hotel.

Our evening meal in the Oates Grill was not what we expect from a 5 star hotel. Average is the best that it could be described. The breakfast however was plentiful and fresh with a good variety of fresh fruit. The wine was over priced and the cocktails too were expensive at £12 each.

I made the mistake of leaving some clothes in my room, which I discovered when unpacking that evening. I phoned the hotel straight away on the day of check out, and was promised a return call from housekeeping. I made a total of 3 phone calls. Nobody rang me back. It now appears that my clothes have mysteriously disappeared, although other less prestigious hotels have always managed to return items I have inadvertently left behind. I await to see the outcome of this.

On a positive - the valet parking attendant was friendly and helpful.

“Great for business but lacks soul”

Marriott Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club

Stayed overnight on a business trip. Walking into reception was a great experience with beautiful wood paneled walls; however once beyond the old house you are just in another corporate hotel.

Rooms are great - lots of space, 2 beds, amenities etc although the shower and shower curtain combination were not the best in terms of having room "to swing a loofah".

The health centre is great but situated in the middle of the hotel means that your walk to bedrooms may be somewhat confusing (up and down and back up stairs).

Food was excellent although cheapest bottle of wine at £21 was a bit steep (glad someone else was paying).

Overall - good for business and health bunnies, but I would not want to stay there for a romantic getaway.

“Relaxing Break”

Marriott Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club

I stayed at this hotel with a friend and the experience couldn't have been more relaxing. Check in & out was smooth and the 12pm check out seemed more generous than some other hotels I've stayed in. The rate (admittedly with a discount for government employees) I felt was very fair and the breakfast included was HUGE. The deluxe room was large, clean and the beds deliciously appointed with lots of soft feathered pillows.

Spa did not disappoint. The pool was pretty & practically empty on the two occasions I used it and the jacuzzi and steam room were clean and again, empty. The only tiny tiny negative comment is someone forgot to turn on the sauna on the Sunday morning but hardly a serious flaw. The treatments we both had (Indian head massage & back, shoulders & neck massage) were prompt, professional and very relaxing.

Overall I highly recommend this hotel for the price & professionalism of its service.

“Great Wekend ay Hanbury Manor”

I booked a short weekend stay for my wife and myself as mini relaxation break after a hectic Christmas period. We had booked in only fo the Saturday night on a Dinner, B&B package.

We arrived at the hotel at 2.30 and were treated very eficiently and courtesouly at the reception. Our room was in the new wing of the main building and it takes 3-4 minutes t walk through the corridors and halls to reach the further parts of the complex. We reached our room to find that whilst lovely it was two double beds and not a king room. Not normally accustomed to create a fuss I did ring the guest services desk and explain I had requested a king bed room. They were very helpful and promised to call me back. We had not received a call 10 minutes later so left to return to the main reception as we had booked afternoon tea for 3.30pm. As we reached the reception area we were greeted by one of the staff who apologised for the problem with the room, supplied us with new keys to an alternative room and arrnaged for us to have our luggage moved whilst we enjoyed the afternoon tea.

Afternoon tea in the Oak Hall is a great experience. We were supplied with pots of tea, sandwiches, scones and cakes to the point that there was no way 2 people could consume it all. The surrondings and the attentivness of the staff was excelent and as other people have commented you could easily spend a day in this relaxing, papmpered environment.

We returned to our new room and were amazed to find we had been moved to a huge room with separate sitting room area with chairs and a large sofa as well as the king size bedroom and large bathroom. We had a nice view across to the original house and the golf course and couldn't really have asked for anything better.

Dinner that evening in he Oakes Grill was excellent and again the staff attention and conduct was first class. Many of the staff are European but we found no problem at all with their English or their performance. Everyone we met or dealt with during the weekend could be held up as an example to many other hotels I have stayed at.

The beds are very, very comfortabl and we enjoyed a great nights sleep and a very lazy start to the Sunday. Breakfast was available until 11am and there was a great selection form the buffet style servie provided.

Overall we had a superb weekend and oticed lots of little touches in things that are don that really make you feel that little more pampered and important. It's not the cheapest place in the world to stay, but we felt the package we had booked gave us very good value. Next time we take an indulgent night away from the kids we'll be going back to Hanbury Manor.

Initially the woman at the reception wasn't looking very happy and couldn't even manage a smile. The rooms are more 4 star not 5 star as far as looks and tea/coffee making facilities go (I mean how can 4 milks be enough for afternoon & morning)? However the other staff at reception were really nice & helpful to other guests arriving. That was the only bad experience about the place.
Whenever you left your room you are greeted by all the staff who are so polite & helpful.
We had in-room service from Oakes Grill, the food although expensive was cooked to perfection and arrived in 15mins!
The pool was always warm and lovely. There are 2 gyms one is just for Cardiovascular & the other for Weights.
The grounds were superb that are what made the place 5 star & the people who worked there but the we stayed in the newer part of the hotel which we are just too tired with kids to ask for another room, if you go ask for a room in an older part of the hotel.
Our room was so far away from the reception there must be rooms that are not that far to walk.
On a good note the hotel was wonderfully quiet and peaceful, it was great for children and try to visit the Oakes Lounge, it has a lovely blazing log fire and such a cosy atmosphere, the people who work in their made it a truely amazing experience!
Overall it was definately a 5 star with wonderful pillows, the only things that let it down were the bedrooms that could have been a bit more although they were big & not to limit the milks & no brown sugars??? And why the oldest TV in the world, no flat screen no DVD that was 1 thing we really didn't expect!

    • Liked — the grounds & the peacefulness
    • Disliked — average room facilities & no character in the newer rooms!
